On this grid seven Tetris Blocks, each 4 blocks in size must be outlined on the grid. The area has variations on this theme, but this basic principle drives all the puzzles in the Marsh. One must create an outline of the shapes on the grid and fit said shapes in the outline. Basically, on a grid there are representations of Tetris Blocks of various sizes and lengths. The Marsh Zone specializes in Tetris Block puzzles. The Witness is divided into zones, and each zone has puzzles based on a different theme. Let’s look at one of those puzzles, and all the lines and doodles that went into toppling that puzzle. Running through solution after solution and then finding the right one is an incredibly rewarding experience. So much so I have a note pad where I am drawing out puzzles and all the possible solutions I can think of. I’ve gotten pretty involved this time around. This second play through has been a revelatory experience. How the background details reveal puzzle solutions and how all the variations on puzzles build on each other. Because two years later, on a whim I returned to the Witness seeking a different game experience after getting stuck in a bit of a rut and while initially I had similar experiences to the first time around, eventually, I got it. In retrospect, that all feels silly and needlessly provocative. To be exact, on my first End of Year List post I called the Witness “The Videogame I absolutely fucking loathed”.
